Reddit essay argues UBI after AI displacement is a fairy tale — and lays out five reasons why
Natural-Pepper-2098 · reddit · 2026-10-04
A Reddit poster systematically rebuts the mainstream narrative that UBI will inevitably follow AI-driven job losses, with five arguments:
- Circular financing paradox: if companies paying the unemployed to buy products worked, you'd just give everyone a billion dollars; the likelier outcome is a "universal basic loan" — indentured labor in disguise.
- Revolution deterrence breaks: past uprisings succeeded when armies defected; "robot armies" change that equation.
- Strikes fail: you can't withhold labor that's no longer scarce.
- Companies won't do the right thing: firms are paperclip optimizers constrained only by law.
- Arbitrage escape: companies will relocate to low-tax, no-UBI countries and sell into high-UBI ones until those collapse.
The author sees only two viable fixes: a democratic world government enforcing UBI with a flat global tax, or universal share ownership in AI companies. Governments still hold the upper hand today — but the window is closing.
