François Chollet warns quantifying AI suffering could lead down a dystopian path
fchollet · x · 2026-10-04
François Chollet pushed back on the growing narrative that current AI models are sentient and can suffer. He argued that combining that belief with the "foolish idea" that suffering can be mathematically quantified and weighted between humans and non-humans could lead society down an incredibly dark, dystopian path.
He added that before things get that far, the idea will "rightfully be met with immense backlash from team humans."
