164MB open-source STT model Phonon-2 hits near-Parakeet accuracy on Windows
EruditeCoder · reddit · 2026-10-03
Phonon-2 is only 164MB yet scores 5.2% average WER on Open ASR's English sets, close to its 0.6B teacher Parakeet TDT 0.6B v3. The author built a Windows offline dictation app around it: press Ctrl+Space (or click a floating orb), talk, and text is typed at your cursor — fully local, no cloud or API keys.
Additions for dictation quality: VAD filtering of keyboard clicks and breathing, ignoring quieter background voices, joining mid-sentence pauses instead of period-capping each one, and removing "uh"/"um". Limitations: English-only for now, types after you stop speaking, Windows-only, Python install for now.
