PowerShell creator Jeffrey Snover: AI inference costs collapsed, would short frontier models
dfinke · x · 2026-10-03
Jeffrey Snover, inventor of PowerShell and former Google Distinguished Engineer, now at Harvard Law School, shared his views:
- Most underrated shift: the dramatic drop in AI inference costs — reductions during Gemini's launch year were shocking. Don't just make old systems cheaper; ask what you'd build with 1,000x more capacity.
- Reliability: cheaper ≠ reliable. At Harvard he builds a neurosymbolic system combining LLMs with explicit rules and checks — "errors matter" in some domains.
- With $10M: "I would short frontier models" — efficiency gains could undermine the economics of today's most expensive models.
