Stanford students ace AI-done homework but fail finals; department overhauls TA roles
neuroecology · x · 2026-10-02
A Stanford professor reports that AI has led students to ace all homework while skipping office hours—then fail in-person final exams. In response, the department is eliminating office hours and requiring 1:1 TA sessions where students walk through each coding assignment to prove they understand it.
Responding, a St. Andrews alum describes the opposite model: weekly 6-person tutorial sessions with professors/TAs that grill students, with homework counting for almost nothing and grades decided almost entirely by final exams—what he calls the fastest and best way to learn.
