AI 'speech clock' predicts how fast you're ageing from your voice, featured in Nature
AnnaCiaunica · x · 2026-10-02
Researchers built a 'speech clock' that estimates a person's biological age from 4 minutes of speech, drawing on hundreds of vocal features including pitch, speaking speed, and emotional content.
Key findings:
- The 'speech age gap' (predicted minus chronological age) strongly correlates with cognitive issues such as those seen in dementia
- The work was published in Science Advances and featured by Nature news
The team says it offers a scalable, low-cost way to capture biological, cognitive, brain, and social dimensions of ageing and flag people ageing faster than expected.
