Cloudflare launches Traces in open beta to trace full request paths across its platform
threepointone · x · 2026-10-02
Cloudflare introduced Traces (open beta), extending automatic tracing beyond Workers to the entire request path. A single trace now shows security rules, transformations, cache decisions, routing, Worker execution, and origin handling — and can continue into services running on Cloudflare or your own origin.
Highlights:
- Automatic request-level timelines across supported platform operations, zero setup
- Baseline sampling rate with Trace Rules overrides for selected traffic
- End-to-end W3C traceparent header propagation
- Timeline and span details viewable directly in the Cloudflare dashboard
- Export spans to any OpenTelemetry (OTLP) compatible endpoint
Cloudflare frames it as a long-term investment in OpenTelemetry, exposing the internal debugging visibility its own teams use — single traces often contain thousands of spans.
