The anatomy of an AI agent: 7 core components from perception to guardrails, explained
ZabihullahAtal · x · 2026-10-02
A thread breaks down the anatomy of an AI agent into 7 components:
- Perception: takes input from users, APIs, files, or sensors
- Reasoning: the LLM understands the request and decides what to do next
- Planning: decomposes complex tasks into smaller steps (e.g. scan emails → identify important ones → summarize)
- Memory: stores conversation context and retrieves relevant past info
- Tool execution: uses APIs, MCP, databases, browsers, or code
- Guardrails: permission control, risky-action checks, human approval
- Observability: logs, errors, latency, and cost tracking for debugging
The loop: input → reason → plan → use tools → check results → repeat until done. An agent isn't just an LLM, but a system combining models, tools, memory, and control mechanisms.
