Claude Skills explained: why prewritten PDF scripts beat pasting prompts every time
lxfater · x · 2026-10-02
- What Skills solve: Claude can understand PDF content, but understanding and manipulating files are different things. Anthropic's PDF Skill ships prewritten Python scripts to read PDFs and extract form fields, so Claude runs them instead of regenerating an approach each time — turning existing experience, workflows, and tools into reusable capabilities.
- No coding required (usually): Using existing Skills rarely requires writing scripts, though the runtime environment must be ready. The simplest Skill can be just a SKILL.md describing how to do the task.
- vs. pasting prompts: Pasted instructions enter the context on every request; a Skill exposes only its name and description until relevant, then loads details on demand.
- Triggering depends on name + description: Say what it can do (extract text, fill forms, merge docs) and when to use it (when handling PDFs or forms), not just "a great PDF assistant."
- How to validate: Run three real tasks without the Skill, note failures; add a minimal Skill and rerun; check triggering and results, and keep debugging if no improvement. A Skill's value is making AI complete your tasks more reliably, not file completeness.
