Researcher: arXiv flooded with slop, ML academia increasingly marginalized
joshua_saxe · x · 2026-10-02
ML researcher Joshua Saxe says arXiv and academic venues are being denial-of-serviced by low-quality slop submissions, with Google Scholar unusable unless filtered by affiliation or trusted authors. Frontier research now happens privately or leaks out as marketing from closed labs, while academics study black-box products like the OpenAI API and get marginalized without big social-media followings. His heuristic: a reviewable ML paper today should demand the same effort as a median tier-1 conference paper from a decade ago—same volume, far more rigor.
