Hacktoberfest 2026 kicks off under MLH with open-source AI and open-weight models as the theme

Hacktoberfest 2026 launched on October 1, now run by Major League Hacking (MLH) and DEV with DigitalOcean as sponsor, under the theme "AI belongs to everyone."
- The month-long event centers on open-source AI: learning about open-weight models, joining livestreams, trying AI tools you can run and inspect locally, and attending in-person events
- Participants are encouraged to write their first skills.md, build an open-source agent, or fine-tune a model, with no developer background required; the post also explains the difference between open source, open-weight models, and open-source AI tools
- The team also announced DevRelay, a new tool connecting the MLH and DEV communities, plus a Weekend Challenge with more activities planned through October
