Don't teach letter names: sounding out beats "arr" for early literacy
moultano · x · 2026-10-02
Niels Hoven argues that for early literacy, parents should name letters by their sounds ("r" as "rrr", not "arr"). His daughter sounded out "rrraaat" this way, then regressed to "arrraaat" after preschool taught her the standard letter names — which he calls confusing and useless.
moultano adds a linguistic observation: Hindi has no such confusion, since letter names are the sounds themselves, with consonants made pronounceable via an implicit schwa.
