Antitrust scholar slams Anthropic co-founder: awe at neural nets, hubris on society
neil_chilson · x · 2026-10-02
Former FTC scholar Neil Chilson called out what he sees as a contradiction: Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah's language about controlling complex neural networks borrows heavily from Hayek's metaphor about economies — acknowledging that complex systems resist central control. Yet, Chilson argues, that difficulty hasn't taught AI figures similar humility about manipulating society and the economy, which are far more complex. He also restates his view that deterministic systems are the anomaly, and some computer scientists' shock at non-deterministic systems gets the baseline backwards.
