EMNLP Findings paper: explicit reasoning hurts pointwise rerankers, disabling it helps
lintool · x · 2026-10-02
A paper accepted to EMNLP Findings asks a simple question: does reasoning improve pointwise rerankers? The answer is counterintuitive — it can actually hurt, even for Rank1, a reranker trained to reason-then-answer. Related work by Yung Sung Chuang et al. found standard rerankers outperform step-by-step reasoning ones, and disabling the reasoning module of a reasoning reranker improves ranking accuracy — empirical evidence that reasoning is not universally beneficial in retrieval.
