Clio, valued at $5B, acquires Learned Hand in push to bring AI to courts
EJWalters · x · 2026-10-02
Legal tech company Clio (last valued at $5B) has acquired Learned Hand, a startup building AI tools for judges. Terms undisclosed.
- Founder Shlomo Klapper previously worked at Palantir in a forward-deployed-engineer-like role, then went to law school and joined litigation powerhouse Quinn Emanuel; he raised about $5M for the startup.
- While Harvey and Legora fight for Big Law, Clio is betting on the courts: state trial judges are buried in caseloads, and AI adds pressure—pro se cases in federal court rose from a long-term average of 11% to 16.8% in 2025.
- The deal extends Clio beyond small/midsize firms and corporate legal teams into the judiciary.
