Omarchy on WSL: patched aquamarine backend brings Hyprland to Windows with GPU rendering
sytelus · x · 2026-10-01
sytelus details the open-source (MIT) engineering behind running Hyprland/Omarchy on WSL: a new wsl backend patched into aquamarine creates virtual outputs per Windows monitor and renders on the real GPU via Mesa's Direct3D 12 driver (/dev/dxg); frames are shared with Windows through the WSLg shared-memory region (/mnt/wslgshm), with a hvsocket control channel for frame-ready signals, input and clipboard; omarchy.exe takes over fullscreen with a D3D11 swapchain, copying only changed frame regions. One-line installer puts Omarchy in the Start menu.
