Boston Dynamics gives Atlas 13-DOF dexterous hands built for sim-to-real RL and real work

Boston Dynamics unveiled a new dexterous hand for its Atlas humanoid, doubling degrees of freedom from 7 (GR2) to 13 with direct actuation.
The company frames hand design as a ruthless tradeoff between dexterity, strength, ruggedness, cost, repairability and sensing. The new hand is designed from the ground up for high-fidelity simulation to enable sim-to-real RL, fits the next-gen Atlas (100lb+ payload) built for mass manufacturing, and is meant to let robots do genuinely dexterous work.
