True AGI Needs a Complete Agent Redesign: Proactivity, Memory and Self-Budgeted Thinking
Acclynn · reddit · 2026-10-01
A Reddit long-form argues labs are benchmaxxing while agent architecture stands still. True AGI needs: proactive agents that volunteer ideas and clarify intent instead of executing literally; autonomous context management via an internal memory network rather than fill-and-compact cycles and workspace markdown files; and self-budgeted reasoning — give the agent a time/token budget and let it self-assess capability and allocate thinking effort, instead of manual effort settings. Even with soaring benchmarks, we're far from all of this.
