Billions of AI agents will out-research mathematicians, leaving humans only love-driven problems

The author pushes back on the claim that mathematicians are safe because of open-ended questions and Gödel-style arguments: recursive self-improving models are near, and billions of agents generating conjectures — with the same initial biases as humans — will eventually run mathematicians over.
The only protection, he argues, is economic: agents will prioritize math with short-term commercial value, leaving humans with extremely long-horizon problems that even humans will tackle via AI prompting.
His conclusion: math research returns to an era when only a handful of privileged enthusiasts across Europe studied purely for the love of science.
