Indie Dev on Keyword Strategy: Newbies Chase Blue Oceans, Veterans Fight on Big Terms
gefei55 · x · 2026-10-01
An indie developer shares site-building keyword and competition strategy:
- Newbies/inexperienced: pick new keywords for new sites, or low-competition blue-ocean terms, to avoid competition and get positive feedback with fewer resources — so they must keep their product secret, or competitors flood in.
- Veterans: beyond occasionally grabbing big new-keyword opportunities, they mostly target high-value terms with paying demand, where they don't fear competition or exposing their domain, since it's a fight of resources and time.
- Another case: when everyone assumes an old term is too competitive and stays out, whoever enters and gets traffic plus paying users within months will keep it tightly hidden.
- Contrast with Marc Lou and Pieter Levels: already famous with large followings, they can launch a product fast by publicly sharing product and revenue; the upside of going public outweighs the competition risk.
