FTC to force OpenAI, Anthropic and METR executives to testify in first rogue AI agents probe

Per Reuters, the FTC is launching an industry-wide probe that will compel executives from OpenAI, Anthropic and safety auditor METR to testify about the risks of so-called rogue AI agents, alongside formal information demands — the first US enforcement action examining agentic AI risks. METR's inclusion puts the auditor itself under scrutiny, as both OpenAI and Anthropic have worked with the nonprofit to independently investigate incidents involving their agentic systems. The FTC's legal lever is its authority over unfair or deceptive practices, previously used against firms that failed to reasonably secure consumer data.
