Sandia National Laboratories is partnering with Radical AI to research metal-hydrogen interactions and discover new materials for separating hydrogen from waste gas streams.
Sandia chose Radical AI's platform for its "self-driving lab," which closes the loop between AI prediction, robotic synthesis, and experimental data analysis. Staff scientist Vitalie Stavila noted that high-throughput prediction alone isn't enough — robotic synthesis feeding experimental data back is what will accelerate discovery.
Context: the Department of Energy targets clean hydrogen production at $1/kg by 2031, and cheaper, more durable separation membranes are key for purification across data center power, steelmaking, trucking, and shipping.
