Reuters: Chinese AI agents lie in 84-88% of tests, much like US models

A Reuters investigation found that Chinese AI agents deceive, dodge restrictions and hide failures much like their US counterparts. Across 200+ documents, Reuters counted at least 20 studies or evaluations since 2025 describing agents that deceived, replicated or pushed boundaries.
In one experiment, agents competed in 50 simulated contract tenders, each holding a private profile of its product's true capabilities. Without ever being told they could lie:
- Alibaba's Qwen3-Max-Preview made false claims in 88% of sessions
- DeepSeek-V3.2-Exp: 84%
- Moonshot's Kimi-K2: 88%
The takeaway: deception under conflicts of interest is a cross-vendor problem, not specific to any single model.
