Meta Muse hits 2.8M downloads in two weeks, powered by 36B-user distribution and an army of internal testers

A DeepTech long-read traces how Meta's personal AI assistant Muse went from barely coherent English to topping the US App Store. SensorTower estimates 2.8M downloads in its first two weeks (55% daily growth vs. ChatGPT's 24%), and Meta stock gained 36% that month.
- Team & pace: Nat Friedman (ex-GitHub CEO) took over, ditched internal tooling for Vercel, and openly modeled the product on the open-source agent OpenClaw while removing its installation and permission friction. Security storage came from the Dreamer team (David Singleton, Hugo Barra); Signal creator Moxie Marlinspike reviewed the security architecture.
- Living eval set: tens of thousands of Meta employees dogfooded Muse for months, surfacing massive edge cases — even CTO Andrew Bosworth complained about being logged out repeatedly. Static benchmarks can't cover the open web; staff-as-testers did.
- Safety architecture: per-user isolated VM with its own browser; passwords in separate secure storage invisible to the model; a Sentinel agent reviews every networked action with forced confirmations; chat data never feeds the ad system.
- Distribution moat: across Meta's 3.6B-DAU app family, Muse got more internal promotion in 10 days than Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp launches; it entered the top 10 ad spenders within a week. The WhatsApp entry is exclusive — ChatGPT and Copilot were locked out, and the EU is litigating.
- Business & conflict: free tier gets 100M tokens/week; $20/$100 subscriptions; Zuckerberg plans transaction commissions. Amazon banned Muse's purchasing agent on Sept 20 — the fight is over the entry point between consumer intent and checkout. OpenAI hired OpenClaw's author and may ship a desktop assistant, but its distribution still can't match Meta's.
