RexDouglass argues that the math community's organized push to get funding from AI companies amounts to special interest rent collection — and that math managing to organize effectively alongside other rent collectors is itself an interesting story. In a follow-up he draws an analogy: it's as if CS departments formed a working group demanding funding and free tokens because AI took all the cool programming results, calling the normative line of why math is special but CS isn't pretty funny.
