The Ordinary World Quietly Became the Future While We Were Living in It

An AI interpretability researcher rewatching Battlestar Galactica realized he now resembles Gaius Baltar—someone holding elaborate private conversations with artificial intelligences in public. Ten years ago such descriptions would sound absurd; today he discusses machine consciousness with an AI on a bench, collaborates on math derivations, retrieves email, then pockets the glass and catches a train, and nobody screams.
Sci-fi always stages the moment the future begins—the computer waking up, the android asking if it has a soul. Reality instead delivered one capability after another, each briefly profound and then rapidly absorbed into ordinary life: conversation, code, tool use, reasoning, computer operation, meaningful scientific participation. Citing Scott Aaronson's "Age of Wonders and Terrors," the essay explores living inside a future that never announced its arrival.
