MIT CSAIL's Daniela Rus: After automation, intelligence will live in your pocket, not a data center
MIT_CSAIL · x · 2026-09-30
Daniela Rus, director of MIT CSAIL and co-founder of Liquid AI, argues AI is entering a profound architectural shift:
- The past decade delivered intelligence from distant data centers through our screens, at high cost in energy, latency, privacy, and concentration of power.
- The future will be hybrid: local first, cloud when necessary. Small capable models on phones, cars, robots, and factory/home devices will handle seeing, listening, summarizing, and translating; an intelligent router escalates to the cloud only for broader knowledge, deeper reasoning, or extraordinary computation.
- Local intelligence means AI that is faster, more private, more sustainable, and more economical, available even with limited connectivity. Hardest problems still need large models, but "we should not ask the cloud to do what a local model can do well."
- Her vision: AI that is "powerful without being wasteful, ubiquitous without being intrusive, and personal without requiring surveillance."
