Stripe to acquire OpenRouter in its largest-ever deal, eyeing agent payments

Stripe announced it is acquiring AI model-routing platform OpenRouter in its largest-ever acquisition, following the recent purchases of Bridge, Privy, and Metronome.\n\nThe Deal Director reviewed the investor letter sent to Stripe's largest shareholders plus conversations with industry peers. Stripe says it treats January 1st as the start of the "singularity"—a large inflection in long-run trends such as new firm creation—so it is operating on the basis of a phase change. Optimizing for developers, Stripe argues, is essentially the same as optimizing for coding harnesses and agents, since both want programmability and frictionless setup; that's why so many top AI companies adopted Stripe. Acquiring OpenRouter puts Stripe at the billing and settlement layer for AI inference traffic.
