AI Simulated 100 Papers on LZ Dark Matter Anomaly, Compared Against 82 Real arXiv Papers
skdh · x · 2026-09-29
LZ's xenon detector reported a single nuclear recoil event at 248 keV (background expected 10⁻³; 3.4σ local, 2.6σ global significance). Reza Ebadi ran an offline AI simulation with Claude Fable 5.1 producing 100 theoretical-response papers, then compared them to the 82 real arXiv papers citing the LZ result.
Where simulation and real community agree:
- Natural reading: endothermic inelastic dark matter, TeV-scale masses with splitting δ ≈ 300–390 keV
- Solar capture rules out the thermal Higgsino (its annihilation would exceed IceCube limits)
- A seasonal modulation test needs 11 events for 3σ at δ = 350 keV
- XENONnT and PandaX-4T should hold 1.5 events combined at best fit
Where AI falls short: it reproduces the standard attempts (Higgsino-style explanations) but misses hypotheses requiring genuine creativity, such as neutron disappearance — precisely the gap between simulated and real scientific communities.
