AMD Acquires WorldLabs for $8.2B; Fei-Fei Li Becomes AMD EVP and Chief Scientist

Fei-Fei Li announced that World Labs, her spatial intelligence startup, is joining AMD in an $8.2B acquisition. She becomes AMD EVP and Chief Scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su.
- Founded in 2024 with Ben Mildenhall and Justin Johnson on the thesis that AI must reason in 3D physical space, not just language.
- The team built Atlas, an architecture that predicts the next viewpoint from a 2D image (analogous to next-token prediction), solving sparse reconstruction, and acquired SceniX for robot simulation.
- Tech already used in robot RL environments, medical/entertainment scene generation, and real-estate reconstruction.
- Su was an early World Labs investor; the teams have co-optimized training and inference on AMD GPUs since last year. Li says AI leaving the digital world requires deep hardware integration — the goal is an end-to-end open stack for drug discovery, content creation, education, and next-gen robotics.
