Yoav Goldberg, a well-known NLP researcher, says he is looking for PhD students in AI. On whether to do a PhD at all: if you deeply care about a topic that is not AI or mathematics, now is as good a time as ever. For AI, it's possible—if you have a passion you believe can be pursued without huge compute, and such topics exist—but generally, maybe wait.
