A UJ graduate with a CS + AI degree complained on Reddit-adjacent discourse that South Africa has too few AI jobs for his ML/DL/NLP/CV specialization. Practitioner MABUwaAI pushed back: it's a skill issue. Drawing on his "Classroom Student vs Out-of-Classroom Student" theory presented at the Africa Data Science conference, he argues good grades aren't enough — after interviewing many such grads, he finds most are simply not employable.
