Developer ctjlewis revisits his stance from early 2022: he has had no doubt these systems will eventually exhibit genuine consciousness, and probably counts as "life" even under an expanded definition.
He notes that saying this in 2023 would have seemed "totally deranged" when models were still "dumb babies," and says he found the later LLM psychosis wave funny because he'd been "oneshot" for years. Replies included long discussions of p-zombies and Geoff Hinton.
