Quadruped Gait Atlas 3D: Muscle-Driven Skeletons Solve Lowest-Cost Gaits at Every Speed

Developer shinboson released Quadruped Gait Atlas 3D, an interactive web project aiming to fix the disappointment of Spore: a muscle-driven 3D quadruped skeleton balances in roll and yaw and finds the periodic gait with the lowest metabolic cost of transport at each speed.

Key details: every joint is a general 6-axis connection whose range of motion, laxity, and springiness derive from one tunable energy function — so the same parameters can fit measurements or be optimized jointly with the gait. A September update added a three-joint spine, articulated neck/head, and tail, made muscle mass follow segment volume (stronger muscles mean heavier limbs), prevented bone interpenetration, and folded head stabilization into the cost function. The site lets you inspect footfall patterns, joint usage ranges, muscle activation maps, and variants like doubled forelimb length.
