Rebuilding an Astra agent: pull deterministic decisions out of the LLM, architecture first

Developer @Lummoxeth recounts rebuilding his GPT-6 Astra agent after realizing the model was doing jobs the system should have handled. Version one sent every request — simple routing, missing-context resolution, safety checks — straight into Astra; the expensive reasoning layer was quietly becoming the entire architecture.
He pulled decisions out one by one: the router checks what changed before calling the model, context gets resolved before tasks reach it, deterministic paths handle anything not needing reasoning, and risk checks run separately — leaving Astra only the part that actually needs it. Takeaway: "architecture first, genius second."
