ML practitioner Andriy Burkov doubles down on his position that LLMs are statistical machines lacking human understanding. At best, he argues, an LLM is an 'imitation engine' whose facade falls apart on novel questions or commands, citing two failure examples. He concedes such issues get patched into more convincing imitation, but questions whether that ever amounts to genuine understanding.
