Jev makes the same mistakes as flash-tier LLMs, so cascading them buys almost nothing
joecole · x · 2026-09-27
- A new arXiv draft by Delip Rao's team shows small model Jev makes mistakes highly correlated with other flash-tier LLMs.
- Because Jev is grounded on (i.e., same distribution as) LLMs, LLM judges repeat nearly all of Jev's most confident errors; cascading Jev's "low-confidence" verdicts to an LLM lowers cost but gains almost nothing in accuracy.
- Implication: the common cost-saving cascade architecture of small model + large model verifier doesn't deliver its assumed benefits.
(RT discussion adds that this explains why cascade accuracy gains in practice consistently fall short of expectations.)
