Huawei report: physical intelligence needs cloud-edge-device synergy, not single-point fixes

Huawei, CAICT and partners released a report arguing physical intelligence must evolve from single-point capability to system-level design. Robots face a dilemma between real-time control and complex reasoning: edge hardware is constrained, cloud latency can't meet millisecond control needs, and pure cloud setups fail in weak networks.

The proposed "three-domain synergy, one-network" architecture splits tasks across device (millisecond control), edge (data aggregation, multi-robot coordination, offline autonomy) and cloud (large models, global planning), connected via NearLink, 5G-A, TSN and industrial Ethernet. A data flywheel — real-robot data flowing back to cloud training, then redeployment — targets embodiment's data/representation/closure walls. Rollout is phased toward 2028-2030 regional autonomy, starting in manufacturing and logistics; Huawei's Kirin training ground with the National Humanoid Robot Innovation Center is the first scaled practice.
