ARC Prize declared frontier AI couldn't beat ARC — weeks before o3 proved it wrong

This post resurfaces ARC Prize's late-October 2024 essay, How to Beat ARC-AGI by Combining Deep Learning and Program Synthesis. Three months into the contest, the ARC Prize team confidently concluded that frontier AI ideas could not beat ARC, arguing that ordinary deep learning was insufficient and program synthesis was necessary — while flagging OpenAI's then-new o1 as a model worth understanding for its limits.
Shortly afterward, o3 shattered ARC-AGI benchmarks, turning the essay's confident verdict into a striking reversal. The poster sums it up with a single "oof."
