AxonDAO released AxonOS, a GPU-native Linux desktop environment for researchers and AI builders, streaming a full graphical desktop to the browser with direct GPU passthrough (example: NVIDIA Tesla V100 32GB dedicated VRAM).
Problems it targets:
- GPU clouds were built for servers, but researchers need workstations; renting a cloud GPU usually gives a headless virtual server that takes hours to set up and traps you in a restrictive shell or thin notebook.
- SSH-only is limiting: scientific workflows need browsers, interactive file directories, local IDEs and graphical plotting.
- Notebook-only is incomplete: Jupyter is great for snippets but lacks terminal scripts, file managers, local IDEs and direct web access.
- Cloud setup wastes time on configuration testing, CUDA driver alignment and desktop-streaming wrappers.
- vGPU virtualization overhead adds performance penalties and driver issues.
Solution: not a remote shell but a real workstation — a streamed full graphical Linux desktop with direct hardware drivers, preloaded scientific tools, persistent storage and crypto-native access, no cloud images to manage. Self-hosting supported, with deployment services from AxonDAO. Open-source on GitHub with live telemetry.
