Heidelberg launches medical AI institute IMAI, hiring across four research tracks

Heidelberg University Hospital and the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University are launching the Institute for Medical AI (IMAI) on 1 October 2026, serving as the central AI hub for the Heidelberg-Mannheim hospital system with research, clinical deployment, and education under one roof.
The institute is hiring postdocs, engineers, and researchers (on-site in Heidelberg) across four tracks:
- Biomedical AI: multimodal foundation models, biomarkers, agents
- Robotics: lab automation, physical action surfaces for agents
- AI social sciences: multi-agent systems, agent "civilizations"
- Deploying AI in a large hospital system
Its Innovation & Implementation Center (IIC) moves research prototypes through prospective clinical evaluation and runs clinical AI infrastructure, industry collaborations, and startup support. Contact: [email protected].
