Google Cloud brings native BM25 full-text search to AlloyDB and Cloud SQL via Tiger Data's pg_textsearch

Tiger Data, the creators of TimescaleDB, announced that its open-source BM25 search engine pgtextsearch is now natively supported in Google Cloud's AlloyDB and Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL.
- Unlike earlier Postgres search methods that degrade at scale, BM25 applies inverse document frequency, term frequency saturation, and length normalization for more accurate ranking
- The integration removes the need for separate search infrastructure; indexes live in standard PostgreSQL pages, supporting PostgreSQL 17/18
- The news was shared by founder Michael Freedman, riffing on "BM25 is all you need" with search researcher Jimmy Lin
