Zapier co-founder and CEO Wade Foster published an AI fluency rubric now used by hundreds of companies to screen candidates and grade teams, adding 'AI fluency' as a performance-review line. It has 4 levels: Unacceptable, Capable, Adoptive, Transformative.
Aakash Gupta brought three of his own PM artifacts for live grading:
- Artifact 1: a ChatGPT-written PRD, no prototype or customer evidence. Capable in 2024; in 2026 Wade called it 'a little old-fashioned' and wanted to throw it into Cursor and build it himself.
- Artifact 2: working prototype first, then a markdown PRD with customer evidence — 'very solidly' Adoptive; Wade then pressed on the Q4 timeline: 'you've got five weeks. What are we doing for five weeks?'
Takeaway: the bar for 'AI fluency' at work is rising fast — last year's competent practice is already outdated.
