Launching AI Features With Weaker Models Is Counterintuitive, Says Practitioner
matt_slotnick · x · 2026-09-25
A practitioner argues it's counterintuitive to launch a feature with worse models or prohibitive pricing, since that hurts value discovery.
The trend, he says, overwhelmingly favors over-provisioning intelligence at launch and post-training to fit afterwards: new features tend to work out of the box best (at least for now) with frontier models, so the pattern is launch, learn, iterate, then post-train.
He stresses this isn't a one-time thing — every new major functionality follows this pattern.
