Consensys splits in two; MetaMask bets on AI agents as the money layer
LexSokolin · x · 2026-09-24
Joseph Lubin announced Consensys is splitting into two companies: MetaMask operates solely as the consumer platform (Lubin as Chairman & CEO), while Linea and the institutional/protocol business carry the Consensys name. Users' apps, assets, and keys are unchanged.
The pitch frames the real battle as "robot money," not another fintech feature war: who owns the agent between humans and their money. Lubin cites projections of $1T in agent-handled financial activity by 2030 and $4T by 2035, arguing an open stack of stablecoins, tokenized assets, DeFi, and verifiable agent identity (e.g., ERC-8004) is needed to keep it a commons rather than walled gardens.
