Meta launches camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio Glasses amid wearable surveillance backlash

At Meta Connect 2026, smart glasses are everywhere inside the venue, but outside it, public backlash against wearable surveillance tech — smart glasses, smartwatches, AI pendants — is gaining steam. Against that backdrop, Meta is launching Ray-Ban Meta Audio Glasses: smart glasses infused with Meta AI but with no camera for recording others. Meta says the audio-only design has been in the works for years and the timing is a coincidence, which The Verge finds curious.
