Elon Musk laid out why he sees Neuralink as critical in the AI era: human output bandwidth is roughly 100 bits per second (vision input reaches a few megabits/sec), while computers communicate at around 1 trillion bits per second.
He argued that even in the most benign scenario—super-friendly AI trying its best to make humans happy—the communication gap makes talking to a human feel like "talking to a tree" for a terabit-class AI. Anything that raises human communication speed, he claims, improves human-machine alignment, which is the bandwidth problem Neuralink was created to solve.
