arXiv announced $17.2 million in multiyear commitments from three philanthropic organizations — Simons Foundation International, Siegel Family Endowment, and XTX Markets — spanning three to five years to support its transition into an independent nonprofit.
The funding targets three core areas: technical infrastructure, ongoing operations and organizational capacity, and improved services for its millions of annual users. Founded over 35 years ago, arXiv remains central to scholarly communication across physics, math, CS, quantitative biology, statistics, and economics. CEO penelope lewis said the commitments put arXiv "on solid footing" for its next chapter.
