Pope's AI advisor warns big labs behave like cartels, calls for democratic regulation

Father Paolo Benanti, who advises the Catholic Church on AI, told WIRED that hysteria over godlike AI destroying humanity distracts from the real issue: constraining the companies building the technology.
He argues that big labs cast the problem as so complex only they can solve it, excluding everyone else. "Ethics cannot be something that belongs to the board of trustees of a company. It has to be balanced, mitigated in debate in the public square. We need democratic regulation." The piece also cites Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's earlier calls for mandatory third-party evaluations and a crackdown on distillation.
