Gates Foundation-led coalition of 60 orgs aims to bring AI to 3.4B speakers of underrepresented languages

At the annual Goalkeepers event, 60 initial signatories — frontier AI labs, governments, philanthropies, companies and community organizations — announced a five-year goal: enabling the estimated 3.4 billion speakers of languages underrepresented in today's AI models to use AI in their own language and voice.
Key points:
- Only a small share of the world's 7,000 languages are well-resourced enough to support strong AI capabilities
- The coalition combines locally led research, model development, funding and public policy, and invites more organizations to join
It is one of the largest cross-sector coalitions on AI language equity to date.
